Family & money / Planning guide

A family conversation about care, time, and money.

A simple meeting agenda for sharing responsibilities, naming open questions, and choosing one next step together.

A preparation resource for U.S. readers. This guide has not received specialist review and does not provide personalized medical, financial, benefits, or legal advice.

Invite the people involved

Start with the person receiving care and ask whom they want included. Choose a manageable time and ask which topics are welcome. Families take many forms; roles should follow consent, capacity, and actual availability.

Put the practical work on the page

List tasks such as appointments, transport, meals, paperwork, and checking in. Ask who can help, how often, and what support they need. Include the caregiver’s own rest, work, and commitments in the discussion.

Talk about costs without assuming

Invite people to name expenses they are comfortable discussing. Note which costs are known and which need investigation. Nobody has to disclose income, account access, or medical information to complete this agenda. Keep sensitive details out of shared copies.

Agree on one next step

For each action, name a person who agrees to take it and a date to check back. Keep unresolved benefit, medical, and legal questions on a separate list for the appropriate professional. Do not treat this meeting or worksheet as authority to make decisions for someone else.

This is an original conversation agenda, not a summary of a benefits program or a legal document.
