Care access / Planning guide

Finding therapy that fits your life and your budget.

A search plan for asking about cost, availability, insurance, and the kind of support you are looking for.

A preparation resource for U.S. readers. This guide has not received specialist review and does not provide personalized medical, financial, benefits, or legal advice.

Name what matters to you

Write down your preferences: in-person or remote visits, schedule, language, accessibility needs, and whether you want a Black therapist or someone with particular experience. You do not have to share your full story in an initial inquiry.

Begin with a few search routes

If you have insurance, check its provider directory and ask the insurer about your benefits. SAMHSA’s resource page links to health centers and state agencies that can help you explore lower-cost services. Directories are a starting point: confirm details with the individual practice.

Ask about the complete cost

Ask about the fee, insurance participation, what you may owe, and any cancellation charge. SAMHSA notes that some providers offer sliding-fee arrangements based on income. Ask whether one is available, how it is calculated, and whether there is a waitlist. An advertised option does not guarantee an available appointment.

Make room for fit

You can ask: “How do you approach working with Black clients?” or “Do you have experience with the concerns I want to discuss?” Ask about the clinician’s license and whether they can see clients in your state, especially for telehealth. Verify credentials with the relevant state licensing board.

Keep a short comparison

Record the practice, contact date, availability, cost questions, and your next step. If a practice cannot see you, ask whether it knows another appropriate service. This worksheet helps organize a search; it does not assess a clinician or recommend treatment.

This is an original conversation agenda, not a summary of a benefits program or a legal document.
